GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz criticized the prisoner swap this weekend between the U.S. and Iran, saying the Obama administration is “negotiating with terrorists” and suggested the deal is part of the president’s overall weak foreign policy.
“Praise God, Americans are coming home,” said the Texas senator said on Fox News Sunday. “But this deal is really problematic. And it reflects a pattern we’ve seen in the Obama administration over and over again of negotiating with terrorists, and making deals and trades that endanger U.S. safety and security.”
Cruz said the swap sets a “dangerous precedent,” despite the White House saying it was a “one-time” situation created by the nuclear deal.
He also said: “The only reason they were seized is because of the weakness of Barack Obama. The Obama Clinton foreign policy, leading from behind. Our enemies are laughing at us.”
Cruz also doubled down on his criticism of Donald Trump’s “New York values,” which he characterized as non-conservative. He said that Trump spoke of those very values during a 1999 “Meet the Press” interview which Cruz tweeted a video of on Saturday.
